Police in the Eastern Cape are investigating a case of housebreaking, attempted murder and murder after a suspect was shot and killed on a farm in Bedford.
Spokesperson, Brigadier Thembinkosi Kinana, says the farm owner was at home on Wednesday when he suddenly heard glass breaking shortly before 2 pm.
He says as the 81-year-old complainant walked out of his living room, towards the front door, to investigate, someone started shooting at him.
Brigadier Kinana says the homeowner then ran towards his bedroom to fetch his firearm and returned fire.
He says as the shootout ensued one of the suspects aged in his mid to late twenties was fatally wounded.
Kinana says the other man fled from the scene on foot and disappeared into the bushes and could not be found.
The rifle used by the farmer was confiscated by the police.
No arrests have yet been made and a search for the missing suspect will continue on Thursday.
