Algoa Bus to give striking drivers an ultimatum

Striking Algoa Bus drivers will be given an ultimatum on Tuesday to return to work by Thursday or face dismissal.

This was confirmed by CEO Sicelo Duze who said the company had obtained an interdict to bring the wild-cat strike by around 100 members of the union Thor to an end.

Union members downed tools last week over their apparent unhappiness about disciplinary action taken against some shop stewards.

Speaking to Algoa FM News, Duze said the striking drivers have changed their demand from wanting their suspended shop stewards to be reinstated to having the charges against them changed.

"If they feel that the charges are not correct they need to bring that to a hearing. They haven't come back and we going to give them their ultimatum by tomorrow morning (Tuesday) that if by Thursday they are not here that will be the end of the game," he said.

Duze has also apologised to the thousands of commuters who have been left stranded by the strike which began last week.

The strike has also been marred by reports of intimidation, buses being stoned and one petrol-bombed on Monday. No one was injured.
