Two men who escaped from a moving police vehicle in Port Elizabeth on Tuesday while being transported from court back to prison have been re-arrested.
Police said Mbongosi Mgoqi (24) and Jason Witbooi (22) were arrested in the Storms River Area at around noon on Saturday “with the assistance of an alert motorist”.
Police spokesperson, Captain Gerda Swart, said it is believed that the two had hidden out in the Kareedouw area before deciding to leave on Saturday.
“The two, who were hitchhiking, got a lift from an alert community member who immediately recognised them and notified the police in Storms River,” she said.
Members from the Storms River SAPS set up a roadblock on the N2 and pulled the vehicle off the road and placed them under arrest.
Police said Witbooi was arrested for the 2018 murder of 69-year-old Norman Ludwig who resided on a farm in the Joubertina area while Mgoqi was serving a five-year sentence for culpable homicide.
They will appear in court in Humansdorp on Monday on the additional charge of escaping from lawful custody.
