Organised agriculture has expressed its support for Eskom's plea for South Africans to reduce energy consumption.
Agri SA president, Johannes Möller, backed the parastatal following an information session where Eskom outlined the projected electricity demand the next two months.
Möller says given the distinctive nature of agriculture, the sector's ability to save power is linked to biological processes around animal production, crop irrigation and the need for an uninterrupted cold chain for fruit destined for the export market.
"The South African agriculture is not a very consumer of electricity, we consume less than 3% but even so we feel that we can make a positive contribution and therefore we are requesting South African farmers and agri-businesses to wherever possible to use as little electricity as possible as it is in the countries best interest," Möller said.
