Agri Eastern Cape says it is shocked and saddened by the murder of one of its members on his farm outside East London.
The organisation's Rural Safety Chairperson, Alfonso van Niekerk says 34-year-old Darryl Richter from the farm, Waterfall, was patrolling nearby farm roads on Saturday evening when he noticed a suspicious vehicle.
He says Richter requested assistance from other farmers on his radio before approaching the vehicle.
He then encountered three armed men and an altercation ensued during which he was stabbed.
Van Niekerk says he still managed to shoot and fatally wound two of the three attackers.
He says it is believed that the third attacker fled the scene on foot and was potentially wounded.
When neighboring farmers arrived at the scene, Richter was still alive and managed to inform his fellow farmers about the incident.
He later succumbed to the stab wounds he sustained.
Van Niekerk says the motive for the attack is still unknown, and the suspicious vehicle was found near the scene with dogs loaded in the back.
Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Thembinosi Kinana says a murder case and two inquest dockets have been registered for investigation.
He says no arrest has been made at this stage.
