Agri EC appeals to farmers concerned about land expropriation without compensation

Agri Eastern Cape said land expropriation without compensation would be impractical and difficult to implement.

Agri Eastern Cape president, Douglas Stern, was commenting this week on the adoption in Parliament of an EFF motion that paves the way for Section 25 of the Constitution to be amended, to give effect to government policy of expropriating land without compensation.

Stern told Algoa FM News that he was not too worried about the issue.

"In the agricultural sector, there are huge sums of money invested in infrastructure.  The thing is just not been thought through and that is why I said in my humble opinion it is just another political foofie (ploy).  I cannot see this materialising," he said.

Stern referred to an earlier proposal for farmers to give 50% of their land to their workers, saying "nothing has materialised from that."

"And, that is why I'm not overly worried about this whole exercise," he said.

Stern had the following message for farmers who were worried about the proposals on land expropriation without compensation.

"I want to appeal to my fellow farmers not to panic and do anything irresponsible.  Because, to date, there is nothing on the table for any reason be concerned about," he said.

Stern told farmers to "carry on doing what you do best, that is to produce food for our country while enjoying your farming."
