Agri Eastern Cape reacts to double farm murder

The president of Agri Eastern Cape, Ernest Pringle, has raised concern about the increase in farm attacks in the Province.

Reacting to Wedenesday's brutal murder of an elderly couple on their farm near Barkley East, Pringle told Algoa FM News that farmers should take note that as as soft targets they're especially vulnerable.

"Nearly every farm attack is on elderly people and by youngsters, like this one of 22-years old. Our farmers must take careful note of the fact that the soft targets are vulnerable to this sort of thing. We really must take precautions to try and prevent these attacks from happening." said Pringle

Pringle said the issue of farm attacks was discussed at the recently held Agri SA Congress in Pretoria, and government was prepared to assist farmers.

"The minister has finally signed the new reservers policy which none of us has seen yet, but be that so goverment is prepared to assist with security on the farms but they obviously expect the farmers to do it themselves."

This follows the murder of Dawid and Ralie de Villiers, whose bodies were found on their farm, Broadlands by their daughter early on Wednesday morning.

Their 53-year-old son, Dawie, was seriously injured in the attack in which they all suffered stab wounds and cuts. He is in a serious condition in a Bloemfontein hospital.

A 22-year-old Lesotho man arrested within nine hours of the incident is expected to appear in court soon on charges of murder and attempted murder.
