The Amathole District Municipality in the Eastern Cape says it's trying to recoup over R19 million rands relating to damages to property, assets and water infrastructure incurred during an unlawful strike last year.
At least 400 of its employees, who are members of the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) will not be paid their salaries as a result of their involvement in the strike.
Municipal spokesperson, Noni Madikizela-Vuso says the large-scale vandalism, allegedly by SAMWU members, took place in November and December last year.
The Municipality has also initiated a disciplinary process against the 19 shop stewards who led the action.
Madikizela-Vuso says the deductions per employee are between R3 300 and R25 000 and will be spread over four months effective from the 25th of this month.
SAMWU members also embarked on a violent strike in August of 2019 which led to taps in the region running dry.
