Two boys from Addo in the Eastern Cape who were out to collect wood on Wednesday morning made a remarkable discovery.
Police spokesperson, lieutenant-colonel Priscilla Naidu, says 14-year-old Thorne Booysen from Valencia and a friend went to fetch wood in the bushes when they heard a baby crying.
"The astounded boys alleged that they looked around and when they saw no-one, they followed the cries to where they discovered the baby," she said.
"The infant, believed to be a few hours old was wrapped in a woman’s dress and T-shirt and was hidden in the bushes, covered with weeds. The placenta and umbilical cord was still attached to the child," she said.
Naidu says the boys carried the drenched child to the police station which is about 2km’s away. The child was taken to the clinic and thereafter transferred to the Sunday’s Valley Hospital."
She says police have opened a case of attempted murder and child abandonment.
Naidu says they are appealing to the Addo community to assist them in tracing the child's mother.
She says anyone who knows of anybody who may have given birth in the last 24 hours is asked to contact D/W/O Deon Botha at 042 2338822 or 0824417812.
