A man who was abducted and shoved in the boot of his VW Polo this weekend crawled to safety after his alleged hijackers got involved in a high-speed chase with police.
Spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says members were busy on patrols on Saturday night when they noticed the suspicious vehicle, with five occupants, driving around in the streets of New Brighton.
She says in Seyisi Street, members wanted to stop and search the vehicle which sped off leading to the chase.
Captain Janse van Rensburg says when New Brighton members called for back-up the driver eventually lost control and collided at a traffic circle at Mavuso Street, M17.
She says three suspects alighted from the car and ran away unharmed while an accomplice fired shots at police who were arrested on the scene.
The driver, who was stuck behind the driver's seat following the accident was also taken into custody.
The two men are expected to appear in the New Brighton Magistrates Court this week on charges of hijacking, kidnapping and possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.
