A foul smell coming from a house in Korsten, Gqeberha has led to the discovery of abalone worth hundreds of thousands of rands.
Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says concerned neighbours called police to a house in Daniel Street on Tuesday after suspecting that the foul smell could be that of a decomposing body.
She says police in Gelvandale responded to the scene and forcibly entered the house as nobody was home.
Colonel Naidu says upon entering officers found dry and wet abalone as well as processing equipment which included burners, buckets and deep freezers.
She says the abalone has an estimated value of R688 000 and was confiscated by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environmental Affairs for storage.
A total of 471 units of dried abalone and 4396 units of wet abalone were confiscated.
Colonel Nadu says no arrests have been made and anybody with information is urged to contact the police.
She also urged homeowners to profile their tenants before leasing out their properties as their homes can be seized under the Prevention of Organised Crime Act.
