A feasibility study on the future of the Apple Express will get underway shortly.
That's, according to a report to be submitted to Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality's economic development, tourism and agriculture committee next week.
The report says the Mandela Bay Development Agency has appointed a service provider to conduct the study.
It will focus on ascertaining what the development potential is of the Apple Express line between Port Elizabeth and Avontuur, or a portion of the line, for freight, passengers and tourism.
An earlier study found that it would not be financially sustainable to operate the line purely for tourism purposes.
The report says the objective of the feasibility study is to make a compelling argument to Transnet to make the line available on a lease basis and to agree to appoint an agent to drive the process.
