The body of a nine-month-old baby has been found in a bag inside a house in the Joe Slovo informal settlement between Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage.
Police spokesperson, Constable Ncedi Mbombo, says the woman living in the dwelling found the baby's body and notified the police on Tuesday night.
He says the 25-year-old occupant temporarily gave up the house for her female friend, also 25, to stay there.
The friend left on Tuesday and the woman returned to the house, where she found the body.
Mbombo says the cause of the baby's death is not yet known and will be determined during a post mortem.
Police have opened a murder docket.
