80% of fires in the Garden Route now under control - EDM


The Eden District Municipality said that 80% of the fires in Knysna and Plettenberg Bay have been contained.

In a statement on Friday, Municipal Manager, Monde Stratu, said that emergency services and fire-fighters were focusing on mopping-up operations and also assisting those affected by the fires.

Stratu said between 3 000 and 4 000 residents are displaced, which he said meant that they were currently staying with relatives or friends.

He said several evacuated areas were declared safe and people were moving back to their houses.

Stratu added that around 800 people were still being accommodated in halls.

The Eden District Municipal Manager said an estimated 300 structures had burned down, or were damaged in the fire while the water supply to Knysna is now running very low.

Furthermore, police released the name of the little girl who's body was found in the Welbedacht area On Thursday.

Four-year-old Catherine Matope's body was found by police next to a dam.

Captain Pojie also released the names of the victims who perished on a smallholding at Elandskraal on Wednesday as Tony Johnson, his pregnant wife, Madre' and their 7-year-old son, Michael.

Their bodies were found about 50 metres from their home.

Meanwhile, 24-year-old volunteer fire-fighter, Bradley Richards, succumbed to his severe burn injuries in hospital last night while a colleague was also admitted to hospital with burns over half of his body.

A total of ten people have died in the fires along the Garden Route and the week's storm which lashed the Western Cape.
