More than 70 pupils at a school in Port St Johns in the Eastern Cape were rushed to hospital on Friday following suspected poisoning.
While the details of the incident are still sketchy, it’s understood it happened in the vicinity of the Nkangala Senior Secondary School.
The provincial Education Department says investigations are underway.
Spokesperson Mali Mtima says the children were allegedly poisoned by a passer-by.
He says the Education MEC is expected to visit the families at the weekend.
Mtima says the learners are being attended to at various healthcare facilities in the region, including the Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital.
Police have launched an investigation.
