A 69-year-old Gqeberha man has been jailed for life raping his young granddaughter.
The National Prosecuting Authority said the man sentenced this week for the incidents that occurred between 2016, when the child was six years old, and 2019.
NPA spokesperson, Anelisa Ngckani, said the child lived with him and her grandmother after her mother passed away in 2014.
She said in March 2020, she visited her paternal grandmother at Perseverance and when she was unable to return to her maternal grandparents in Kleinskool due to the Covid-19 hard lockdown, she had the opportunity to inform her paternal grandmother about the rapes.
Ngckani said the grandfather pleaded not guilty to the charges but was convicted and sentenced on the strength of the “compelling case presented by the state.”
She said the case was successfully prosecuted by Advocate Kenny Van Biljon and the NPA welcomed the sentence.
