70-year-old man arrested in PE after gaming centre robbery

File

Quick action by several police units led to the arrest of two men, one aged 70, for their alleged role in the kidnapping of a gaming centre manager and the robbery of the Uitenhage venue on Sunday.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said the drama began at around 05:30 when the manager and his fiance’ were “taken” from their home in Wells Estate by unknown men.

She said they were forced separately into an Isuzu bakkie and the woman into a VW Polo before being driven to the gaming venue in Union Drive in Uitenhage.

Naidu said the security guards on duty noticed the manager and three unknown males being dropped off before the vehicle drove off.

She said the suspicious guards followed them inside the venue but the guards were held at gunpoint before being tied up.

“When another manager entered, he was forced to open the safe, and an undisclosed amount of money was taken,” Naidu said.

The suspects fled in the security guard’s vehicle which was later spotted by police on the R75 near Chatty where they arrested a 70-year-old man and recovered the stolen car.

The second suspect, in his twenties, was arrested at a house in Motherwell where the bakkie was recovered.

Naidu said one suspect is detained on charges of kidnapping, vehicle hijacking, and business robbery while the other is detained on charges of kidnapping and business robbery.

They are due to appear in court soon.

Naidu said none of the money had been recovered.
