17 people killed in Western Cape road accidents

Seventeen people were killed in accidents on Western Cape roads since Friday.

Provincial Traffic Chief Kenny Africa says these include a horrific accident in Kleinmond on Saturday evening when the driver lost control of his vehicle and ploughed into three children that were walking next to the road.

Five people, including the children, died in the accident.

Africa says a passenger was killed in an accident in George on Sunday morning when the driver of a bakkie lost control of the vehicle.

"We also had several roadblocks throughout the province. We stopped 1 919 vehicles, and 687 drivers were tested for alcohol. We arrested 54 drunken drivers, and the highest reading recorded was in Worcester, where the driver was six times over the legal limit", he said.
