15 Eastern Cape SAPS employees in court for fraud and corruption


Fifteen SA Police Service employees, comprising of police officials, general workers and cleaners, appeared in various Eastern Cape courts on charges of fraud and corruption on Thursday.

Hawks spokesperson, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi says its alleged that they had been stripping mechanical and body parts from police vehicles and selling them to willing members of the public.

The suspects, aged between 33 and 52, even sold brand new vehicle parts to pre-arranged buyers.

Three of the suspects were arrested in Queenstown, three in Forest Hill, PE, four in Mthatha and five in Bhisho.

Those who appeared in Mthatha were released on R2 000 bail each, and their case was postponed to June 2 for further investigation.

The Queenstown suspects were released on R1 000 bail each, and they will be in the dock again on May 25.

The Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court granted a R500 bail each to three employees at Forest Hill Saps Garage and will make their next court appearance on May 17.

The five who appeared in the Zwelitsha Magistrate’s Court were granted R5 000 bail, and will appear again on May 6.
