The Eden District Municipality said there were currently 14 active fires being attended to by fire-fighters.
In a statement on Saturday, the Municipality said that their Joint Operations Centre (JOC) was still activated with a follow-up JOC meeting to be convened on Sunday.
“Since yesterday (Fri) until today (Sat), the Herbertsdale, Molen River, one spot in De Vlugt and Waboomskraal wildfires have been extinguished,” EDM said.
“Two other fires were reported overnight in the Sebrafontein and Anys Mountain areas.”
“Currently, the Dubbelberg area is of greatest concern and receives priority because the fire jumped into the pine plantation, most of the firefighters and resources are deployed here.”
“Pine trees, which are not indigenous, cause a higher fuel build-up and are less damp than indigenous forests, and lead to more vigorous and intense fires,” the EDM statement said.
“A Forward Control Point (FCP) has been established at the Buffelsnek Plantation to coordinate firefighting activities at the Dubbelberg fire”.
“Firefighters currently deployed in the district include six from Eden District Municipality, 25 from Mountain to Ocean (MTO), 166 from Working On Fire, 14 from Nature and approximately 20 from PG Bison.”
Role players at the Eden DM JOC include Eden District Municipality, SANParks, WoF, Cape Nature, MTO and PG Bison.
