Eastern Cape traffic authorities say at least 12 people were killed in accident between midnight on Saturday and midnight Sunday.
Provincial traffic spokesperson, Charles Bramwell, said in one incident a pedestrian was hit by a bus on the N2 between Thornhill and Humansdorp.
The victim died on the scene.
Two other pedestrians were also killed in separate incidents in Mqanduli and Engcobo.
In another incident Bramwell said that a driver of a German car was first involved in an accident with another vehicle in Tsolo town.
"On the R396 between Tsolo and Maclear an Audi was first involved with an accident in Tsolo town with a Golf. After this accident was sorted the driver of the Audi proceeded towards Maclear where it was alledged he tried to avoid a sheep and lost control of his car which overturned. The driver was killed instantly," Bramwell said.
At least 12 people were also injured in all of the accidents reported for that 24 hour period.
Meanwhile, Transport Miniser, Dipuo Peters, said in a statement on Saturday that "human factors have been the main cause of the spate of fatal road crashes which have claimed over 845 lives around the country so far this festive season."
"The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) would swiftly investigate the cause of the crashes and the subsequent fatalities," she said in a statement.
