A man from Mdantsane was sentenced to 18-years in prison this week after he raped a toddler in his home two years ago.
The 62-year-old Peter Tshemese's wife was babysitting the child in October 2018 as she was friends with the mother.
A spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority(NPA) Anelisa Ngcakani says Tshemese was sentenced in Bhisho.
She says on the day of the rape, Tshemese's wife heard the baby crying strangely and went to investigate.
Ngcakani says she found the 15-month-old child in the same bed as her husband and noticed that her buttons had been loosened and that there was blood on her diaper.
During sentencing Judge Belinda Hartle said that Tshemese did not take responsibility and was not remorseful for his actions.
She added that he betrayed his wife and the parents of the baby.
Ngcakani says Judge Hartle said the imposition of a life sentence would be disproportionate as Thsemese is 62-years-old and a first-time offender.
He was therefore sentenced to 18-years in prison.
