A police officer captured on a viral video on social media is currently undergoing observation at a local facility in Cape Town.
In the video, the officer is seen acting out of character before assaulting his colleagues who tried to subdue him.
Police Spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa says professionals from the SAPS Employee and Wellness unit are working with medical practitioners from a local facility where the officer and his family are being supported.
She pleaded with social media users to not speculate on the underlying causes of the incident.
In the video, the officer was allegedly taken to task for smoking dagga.
The Officer whose rank and identity is unknown then goes into a bizarre rage mumbling about Rastafarians and cops in movies.
The member was eventually pepper-sprayed and subdued and even then, it took seven officers to secure him into the back of a police van.
Brigadier Potelwa says although the incident played out in a public space it is inappropriate to circulate the video.
She urged the public to stop sharing the video out of respect for his dignity.
Police management has launched an internal investigation.
