"Millionaire student" back in court

The Walter Sisulu University student who got a surprise windfall of 14-million rand paid into her bank account is due back in court on Wednesday.

The 29-year-old accounting student Sibongile Mani is accused of theft for spending more than R800 000 rand which was erroneously deposited into her student account by Intelli-mali

The company is contracted by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme to make payments to students.

Intelli-mali's IT Manager Stephen Meyer testified earlier how Mani had checked her bank balance 12 times during the month of June 2017.

He said when she was first allocated the funds, she purchased food at a local Steers and knew that there was an error made to her allowance because students are only entitled to R1 400.

Mani never reported the matter.

Meyer said they suffered a huge loss as the University's service provider and their reputation was tarnished since the incident.

He added they had also lost one of their clients as a result of the incident.

Mani is currently out on bail.
