Two men who attempted to hijack a woman who had given them a lift from East London have appeared in the Alexandria Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

Police spokesperson, Captain Mali Govender, said the men aged 36 and 51 were hiking to Port Elizabeth when the woman gave them as well as a third hiker, a woman, a lift in her luxury sedan on Friday.

Approximately five kilometres outside Alexandria, the suspects placed a cloth around the driver’s neck as well as the female hiker who was sitting in the front seat.

Govender said they threatened them and demanded money before stabbing the driver in her arm when she continued to drive.

She says the woman was swerving her vehicle across the road in an attempt to get somebody's attention but stopped her car when she was stabbed.

The attackers jumped out of the vehicle and ran into the bushes.

Captain Govender says an officer who was travelling towards Alexandria saw the two women and stopped to assist them.

Police were called out to the scene and the K9 unit managed to arrest both the suspects when they returned to the main road to hitchhike again.
