Boris Johnson has resigned as leader of Britain's Conservative Party, paving the way for the selection of a new Prime Minister after dozens of ministers quit his scandal-hit government.
Johnson told the media outside 10 Downing street that it is clearly the will of the parliamentary Conservative party that there should be a new leader of that party, and therefore a new prime minister.
Fifty-eight-year-old Johnson says the process of choosing a new leader should be now and the timetable will be announced next week.
"I have appointed a cabinet to serve as I will until a new leader is in place".
Johnson thanked the people who voted for his party that helped him secure a landslide victory in 2019.
People could be heard booing Johnson who wrapped up his speech by saying that it had been the best job in the world.
Meanwhile, the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has described Johnson's leadership as one of the most shameful sagas in the history of British politics.
Khan did not mince his words as he took to Twitter to say that Boris Johnson had presided over a government defined by lies, sleaze, an utter lack of integrity, unlawful behaviour, incompetence, and a damaging culture of impunity in public office.
"At every turn, his government has sought to stoke division, play communities off against one another & level down our capital city for political gain."
Khan said it had caused immense damage to the economy and at the same time degraded the country in the eyes of the world.
