Nicole Schafer’s film, Buddha in Africa, won an award at the Durban International Film Festival and will now automatically qualify for consideration for an Oscar nomination by the Academy of Motion Picture, Arts and Sciences.
The documentary tells the story of a Malawian teenager growing up in a Chinese Buddhist orphanage who finds himself facing an identity crisis over his Chinese upbringing and African roots.
For the Kwa Zulu-Natal based Nicole Schafer, this is her first feature film.
Buddah In Africa will be screened at a whole host of festivals for the rest of the year while the cast and crew wait to find out whether or not they made it to the nomination list. Nominees will be announced by the Academy Of Motion Picture, Arts and Sciences on the 13th January 2020.
