Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer the film tells the story of the ‘father of the atomic bomb’.
Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer delves deeply into the mind of the brilliant scientist behind the development of this weapon of mass destruction.
The cast is headed up by Cillian Murphy as Robert Oppenheimer, the Irish actor famous for his role in the BBC TV drama, Peaky Blinders.
The film includes a stellar cast: Emily Blunt plays Oppenheimer's wife, biologist and botanist Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer; Matt Damon appears as General Leslie Groves Jr., director of the Manhattan Project; Robert Downey, Jr. as Lewis Strauss, a founding commissioner of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission; Florence Pugh as psychiatrist Jean Tatlock; and Benny Safdie as the theoretical physicist Edward Teller.
Michael Angarano also makes an appearance together with Josh Hartnett, Rami Malek, and Kenneth Branagh.
The New York Times has said of the film: “Christopher Nolan’s complex, vivid portrait of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the “father of the atomic bomb,” is a brilliant achievement in formal and conceptual terms”.
