Iconic presenter,74-year-old Derek Watts, has expressed his gratitude to his 'absolutely wonderful' Carte Blanche family upon announcing his retirement from the long-running investigative show.
In an interview with Rapport newspaper on Sunday, Watts revealed that he wouldn't be returning to his Sunday night slot on M-Net (DStv 101) any longer, saying that his time with the show as anchor and presenter had come to an end.
Despite being diagnosed in 2022 with skin cancer that had spread to his lungs, Derek continued to bring his loyal audience no holds barred inserts and stories that have “shaped our country.” This was until a sepsis infection in March 2023 caused complications with his cancer treatment. During this time he shared a clip from his hospital bed on social media thanking his fans for their support and indicated that he planned to return to the show.
His announcement marks the end of a truly remarkable 36-year career in front of the Carte Blanche cameras. A career, MultiChoice Group CEO of General Entertainment Nomsa Philiso says, has formed " the tapestry and legacy of the M-Net brand."
Algoa FM joins his huge fan base in wishing him everything of the best with his ongoing treatment.
