Known for courting controversy on social media, Madonna has done it again. This time the 61-year-old pop star attempted to pay tribute to George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, who died in police custody in Minneapolis on Monday after a white officer handcuffed him and knelt on his neck for several minutes as Floyd pleaded that he could not breathe.
Her tribute to Floyd came in the form of a video of her 14-year-old son David Banda dancing to the Michael Jackson song "They Don't Care About Us." Her accompanying post said, "As news of George Floyd's brutal murder travels around the world my son David dances to honour and pay tribute to George and his family and all acts of racism and discrimination that happen on a daily basis in America."
Having watched the clip I can only agree with those who have criticised her post , in my opinion it is hardly a fitting tribute to a man who lost his life so needlessly.
As quoted on EOnline, one Twitter user said, "A bit insensitive as you're a person with a platform to voice their concern, you should be doing a lot more. Having your adopted black son dance ain't going to force change to happen."
Hollywood Larry said, "Good intentions but completely tone-deaf. Dancing away the racism of murderous cops won't actually do anything. But thanks for trying!"
@Madonna, girl.

Good intentions but completely tone deaf. Dancing away the racism of murderous cops won’t actually do anything. But thanks for trying!
There has been widespread condemnation and numerous protests in response to Floyd’s brutal and unnecessary murder. Officer Derek Chauvin and three fellow officers were fired Tuesday from the Minneapolis Police Department and the incident is currently under investigation, but no charges have yet been filed.

In closing, at the start of the global pandemic, Madonna came under fire for a bizarre post of herself in a magnificent bubble-filled bathtub surrounded by candles with a post that referred to the pandemic as the “great equaliser” – I think not Madonna.
