Lockdown has been a long haul and while there has been plenty to watch via streaming platforms like Showmax and Netflix, cabin fever is at an all-time high for most of us. The good news is that our need to get out of the house for some entertainment rather than essential shopping has been answered by some innovative event organisers.
First was the team behind the Splashy Fen Music Festival in Durban who have come up with a concept called Parkflix. It is described by the organisers as “ a unique & innovative concept that is set to be rolled out in Durban, Umhlanga & Hillcrest. Large LED screens with sound broadcast to your car radio will provide perfect venues for movies, live music, BINGO evenings, church gatherings, weddings & funerals. Arrive in your car, stay in your car, leave in your car, Parkflix is safer than grocery shopping.”
Now Cape Town has joined the party - The Mother City Drive-In has announced it is about to launch an all-new cinematic experience. They took to Facebook to announce the good news that there had been a great response to their proposed venture: “ 5000 Likes! Thank you Cape Town for the incredible response you have shown Mother City Drive-In. Rest assured, we are working tirelessly behind the scenes to provide you with some of the best social distancing entertainment in the Mother City! More info to follow in the coming weeks...”

According to CNN the Americans are already up and running with these new forms of entertainment in the midst of the global pandemic.
Meanwhile, producer Zakes Bantwini has set his sights on providing a venue for folk to enjoy the experience of a live concert from the safety of their vehicles. He took to social media to announce the news saying that he had joined forces with the likes of Dj Sox, Kgolo Daguru(Events promoter & Nightclub Mogul) and Dj Mshayi (Co-owner of Rands CPT) to put together the innovative outdoor festival.
“For the past 2 months, we've been engaging with the government to propose the re-opening of the entertainment sector as soon as possible by introducing SA‘s First COVID 19 Drive-in Concert. " The Drive-in Concert " is a music festival specifically designed to create jobs for entertainers while still following strict safety measures on social distancing.”
Let’s hope there are plans in place for a similar venture here in Nelson Mandela Bay!
