Jane Fonda has joined the world of TikTok in an effort to bring home a vitally important message about saving our planet by taking her Fire Drill Friday crusade to the digital space as she too obeys instructions to “stay home”.
In the short clip Fonda starts off by addressing the camera saying “I’m bringing back the Jane Fonda workout during this home sequestration.” As she starts doing leg lifts the scene changes to show Fonda in a red coat. Her message? She wants her fans to workout to fight the climate crisis. By joining #firedrillfriday 4/3 @ 11AMPT #happyathome #indoorworkout
The invitation is for all of us to “ work out with me for the planet.” She goes on to say," There’s a climate crisis that’s a real emergency. Whether you’re on your couch or your yoga mat, would you join me for the virtual fire drill Fridays? The future needs you, I need you.”
As of today, Fonda will move her Fire Drill Friday to this virtual space so that fans and volunteers can text a number to stay up to date with what they can do. Along with Greenpeace USA, Fonda will be joined by other celebrities friends, activists, indigenous leaders, and climate experts.
Where did it all begin? As explained on the official Fire Drill Friday website.” Last fall, Jane Fonda decided to stop everything and take action to stop the climate crisis. Inspired by Greta Thunberg’s call to act like “our house is on fire” and guided by Naomi Klein’s Green New Deal advocacy, Jane reached out to Annie and other trusted allies to say she was ready to do whatever it would take to stop the climate crisis. Starting in October, she dropped all of her commitments and moved to DC so that — together with Greenpeace and other movement allies — she could launch “Fire Drill Fridays,” which would be weekly protests centred around civil disobedience and a demand Congress pass the Green New Deal.”
Over the months Fonda has been joined by celebrities such as Joaquin Phoenix, Susan Sarandon, Martin Sheen, Sam Waterson and Lily Tomlinson. Joaquin Phoenix and Martin Sheen were among the many activists arrested on Jan 10 after participating in one of Fonda’s weekly climate change protests on Capitol Hill. Fonda has herself has been arrested five times for her participation.
