Veteran Afrikaans actor Louis van Niekerk passes on

Esteemed South African actor Louis van Niekerk has died at the age of 87.

NvR Management confirmed the actor's death in a statement on Tuesday saying, “It's with deep sorrow that we heard tonight of Louis van Niekerk's death."

"Sincere condolences to all his family, friends and colleagues. Our culture and arts are poorer. A big tree fell today."

The iconic van Niekerk worked in film, television, movies, and as a theatre director. He was best known in his latter years for his role as Festus in the kykNET soapie Getroud met Rugby.

The cause of death has not been made public.
