Move over Spike, a 30-year-old dog named Bobi has knocked you off your pedestal to claim the title of world's oldest dog.
Two weeks after reporting that a 23-year-old chihuahua mix from Ohio had been declared the world’s oldest living dog by Guinness World Records, Bobi appeared on the scene with paperwork to prove his age.
The rescue pooch, called Spike, was 23 years and 7 days old as of 7 December 2022, and according to the official Guinness, website was “Born in November 1999” and “ achieved canine bragging rights on December 7, 2022", with a certificate of verification issued to prove it from GWR.
Spike has had the title taken from him by a purebred livestock guardian dog that has lived his 30 years and 271 days in the village of Conqueiros in western Portugal, according to Guinness World Records.
Bobi was awarded the accolade on February 2nd having doubled his breed's average life expectancy of 12 to 14 years. According to his owner, Leonel Costa, Bobi eats only human food with no seasoning, drinks almost a liter of water a day, and has never been leashed.
The GWR website states that in 1992 Bobi was registered with Serviço Medico-Veterinário do Município de Leiria (Veterinary Medical Service of the Municipality of Leiria), who have confirmed Bobi’s birth date.
Congratulations Bobi!
