Barbie doll with scoliosis unveiled

Mattel aims to teach youngsters about diversity with the introduction of this new doll

Barbie doll maker Mattel has made history by introducing its first doll with scoliosis.

The toy company's line for Barbie's little sister, Chelsea, now features a doll with curvature of the spine and a removable back brace, aimed at normalizing the equipment and encouraging children to celebrate those who may be different from them.

The toy company says it is aiming  to highlight the 'power of representation'

A review by Minnies Mommy on their website reads: I bought this doll for my daughter after coming across it online. My daughter was born with scoliosis so to find a doll with scoliosis as well is amazing. When my daughter is old enough to understand why we go for yearly X-rays, she’ll now have a friend to go with her and not feel so alone. Thank you so much for creating this doll!

While Sarahrg77 said: “This is a beautiful doll. It is a great size for little hands. It holds my daughter's attention and gets us talking about all the different types of amazing people in this world. I love her brunette hair and back brace. Not one person is the same and that’s how dolls should be too. Teach them diversity.”
