Tributes pour in for 'Sugarman'

Tributes poured in on Wednesday for musician Sixto Diaz Rodriguez who has died at the age of 81.

The passing of the musician, popularly known for his song Sugarman, was announced by Sugarman.org.

He is survived by his wife Konny and daughters, Sandra, Eva and Regan.

Rodriguez was also the subject of an Academy Award winning documentary, Searching for Sugarman by two South African fans who wanted to know what had become of the musician.

The musician reportedly only became aware of his popularity in South Africa after his daughter discovered a website dedicated to him, first toured the country in the late 1990s to sold out shows, including a concert in Gqeberha.

His album Cold Facts was popular in the country.

South African band, The Kiffness said he was a “legend with the most amazing story” having been very popular in SA but relatively obscure in the United States where he lived.
