Siv Ngesi accused of defaming man delighted by taxi strike

Known for not holding back, media personality Siv Ngesi shared that he was on the verge of being sued for defamation by a man whose video he shared on social media. In the video, the man, who Siv calls privileged, talks about finding a way to keep the taxis in Cape Town striking.

According to Daily Maverick, the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) in the Western Cape says that its lawyers are applying for an urgent interdict to stop the City of Cape Town from impounding taxis until the dispute is resolved. The strike commenced on 3 August and was meant to end on 9 August. However, it appears to be ongoing.

Many Capetonians have been heavily affected by the strike, with some missing out on work while others walk lengthy distances from home to the CBD. There has also been an increase in violence, with many people throwing bricks at oncoming cars, injuring many bystanders, burning busses and looting stores to name a few.

However, there are other Capetonians who do not feel the massive impact of the strike the way others do.

On Instagram, Siv shared a TikTok video by @mrsubdj. In the video, the producer and deejay is heard saying the following:

“Hear me out. We need to figure out a way to keep the taxis on strike. Let me explain. Has anyone noticed how quiet the streets are lately? There hasn’t been a single drop of traffic in the last three days. Everyone’s got smiles on their faces, everyone’s driving, the roads are empty… Yes, it is bad that where they are striking they’re blocking roads, they’re causing havoc, they’re burning crap, but for the rest of us, it’s been wonderful… It’s been a delight.”

Siv captioned the shared video, “This is [what] privilege looks like. Doesn’t matter that many are dying, losing jobs, walking home for hours, companies looted and kids getting hurt! Then they say we are playing the ‘race card.'”

The media personality then shared two more posts of a letter he received from the deejay. In the letter, Siv is accused of illegally taking the deejay’s video and posting it while trying to shame him and mislead others. As such, the deejay has allegedly received death threats.

The deejay, who is also an owner of his own festival, then states in the letter that he will be pressing charges and suing The Woman King actor.

Siv captioned the post, “So the privileged young man who shared the video I shared before this post has threatened to press charges against me! But we all know he’s bluffing and he has no case! Here’s the letter for your entertainment. He’s lucky I don’t share his email address, business and social media handles.”
