After week's of speculation, reports made by The Associated Press now state that Prince died of an accidental overdose of the painkiller Fentanyl.
Initially the Midwest Medical Examiner's Office said that the autopsy of the singer was inconclusive, stating that they would wait until the toxicology report returned before making a conclusive statement. Fentanyl is a synthetic opiate drug which is a powerful painkiller and tranquilliser that is said to be fifty times more potent than heroin.
According to an article in Rollingstone friends of the late singer have said that Prince was struggling with a painkiller addiction. An investigation to find out whether the singer obtained the drug through a legal or illegal supplier may happen.
Prince's remains were cremated after the autopsy and he leaves behind an estate worth millions, reportedly without a will.
