New Brighton born Kani awarded OBE

The British High Commissioner, Antony Phillipson, presented Dr John Kani with the honorary OBE


The GQ theatre legend has been awarded the prestigious Order of the British Empire for his extraordinary contributions to drama and social justice across the globe.

 The Order of the British Empire (OBE) is one of the highest honours conferred by the British monarchy. Established in 1917 by King George V, it recognises individuals who have made significant contributions to the arts, sciences, charity, and public service. Recipients are celebrated for their outstanding achievements and their impact on society.

The South African government released a statement congratulating Kani on the award, it reads as follows :

The government congratulates Dr John Kani, South Africa’s veteran actor, director and playwright, for being honoured with the esteemed Order of the British Empire (OBE) by His Majesty King Charles III. Dr Kani’s award for “services to drama” acknowledges his extraordinary contributions to the arts in South Africa and internationally.

The Order of the British Empire is one of the most prestigious honours awarded by the United Kingdom, it recognises individuals for their outstanding achievements and service across various fields, such as the arts, sciences, charitable work, and public service. For Dr Kani, this recognition is a reflection of his lifelong commitment to the arts and his unwavering pursuit of cultural expression through drama.

Kani was last seen in his hometown of Gqeberha in July of 2022 when he brought his internationally acclaimed play Kunene and the King to the Nelson Mandela Bay Theatre.
