In an interview with Q magazine, rapper M.I.A ‘ Mathangi "Maya” Arulpragasam’ dished out how artists, specifically Beyoncé, Rihanna and Madonna were stealing her sound.
“I’m fine with Madonna or Beyoncé or Rihanna being inspired by my work, but I would like them to then go, ‘Yeah, this immigrant who came out of nowhere influenced us, so maybe not all of them are f--ing terrible,”
She added: “They don’t even think like that. They go ‘Yeah, maybe me stealing the stuff says she’s all right. She should be thankful we’re stealing it’.
M.I.A went on to compare her upbringing to Beyoncé’s, saying Bey had an easier road to fame, while she (an immigrant) didn’t have that luxury.
She told Attitude UK, “I’m fine with Madonna or Beyoncé or Rihanna being ‘inspired’ by my work. But I would like them to then go, ‘Yeah, this immigrant who came out of nowhere influenced us, so maybe not all of them are f--king terrible. They don’t even think like that. They go ‘Yeah, maybe me stealing the stuff says she’s all right. She should be thankful we’re stealing it.’ But sometimes you just think, ‘F--k, I have to pay some bills,’ you know?”
The Beyhive was not having it, they took Twitter to defend the Queen Bey of course. They questioned what Bey songs could possibly sound like M.I.A, to pointing how bad she sounds.
