As of January next year France will ban the use of plastic packaging on produce items. This is a huge leap for reducing plastic waste as plastic packaging is one of the most wasteful plastic items.
The new law includes a list of around 30 fruits and vegetables that must be sold without plastic packaging. It is estimated that 37 % of produce is sold in plastic, this law could prevent more than 1 billion plastic items from going to landfills every year.
In addition, from 2022, public spaces in France must provide water fountains to reduce the use of plastic bottles; press and publicity publications must be shipped without plastic wrapping, while fast-food restaurants can no longer offer free plastic toys. And from January 2023, France will also ban throwaway crockery in fast-food restaurants for meals consumed on-site.
