Australian cultural icon Barry Humphries is reported to be in a serious condition after being rushed to hospital. Most famously recognized for his character Dame Edna Everage, 89-year-old Humphries recently underwent hip replacement surgery after slipping on a carpet in his home.
He was readmitted to St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney this week due to complications, his family has rushed to be at his bedside and have said that they will release an official statement soon.
Humphries, also regarded as a satirist and character actor, has made an indelible mark on the entertainment industry. Over the years, he has performed as Dame Edna in countless stage shows, TV appearances, and films. The character is his most famous creation and is well known for her flamboyant outfits, outlandish wigs, and razor-sharp wit, as well as her trademark phrase "Hello, possums!" Humphries has said that he based the character on his own mother and other strong women he knew growing up in Australia.
Humphries has also had a successful career as a writer and actor, both in Australia and abroad. He has appeared in numerous films, including "Finding Nemo" and "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug," and has written several books, including his memoir "My Life as Me" and a novel, "The Life and Death of Sandy Stone."
