A 57-year-old man is facing charges of armed robbery, attempted murder and hijacking following a dramatic cash-in-transit robbery in Daveyton in the Ekurhuleni Metro in Gauteng on Monday.
Police spokesperson, Captain Ndivhuwo Mulamu, says the commotion started when a security cash van arrived at a petrol station to collect money.
The knife-wielding suspect approached the van and ignored a warning from the driver not to approach him.
Mulamu says without warning he stabbed the driver in his back and managed to steal three cash boxes.
He says the other crew member was alerted and immediately chased and shot the suspect.
It is believed that despite the gunshot wound, he then managed to hijack a fully loaded taxi and threatened the driver to continue driving.
Mulamu says he later abandoned the taxi after he realised that the cash boxes were empty.
The suspect was taken to a local hospital to be treated for his gunshot wound and was later discharged under police custody.
He is expected to appear in court soon.
