Seven students who were arrested this week for the violent protests at Wits University was released on Thursday.
A spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority Phindi Mjonondwane says the three dockets were not placed on the court roll due to a lack of evidence.
She says five of the students were charged with public violence whilst two others were charged separately for public violence and malicious injury to property.
Meanwhile, on Thursday, similar scenes played out at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein.
A total of 24 protesters have been arrested outside the main campus after shots were fired by police to disperse the crowds.
Students are protesting against the 2021 registration process.
A senior protester who was one of those arrested told a journalist from our sister station OFM that he owed the University R120 000 and was now not allowed to register.
