Wits University has expressed condolences to the family of the man who died in the Braamfontein CBD outside of the institution on Wednesday morning.
Initial media reports suggest that the 35-year-old civilian lost his life after being caught in clashes between the protestors and members of the South African Police Service.
In the statement, Wits says two student reporters were injured, and three protestors were arrested and taken to the Hillbrow Police Station.
The University has condemned the violence and called for calm.
It says that it remains committed to seeking creative, peaceful solutions to any outstanding issues in the higher education sector.
Meanwhile, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate IPID says they have dispatched four of their officers to the scene to investigate the incident.
Ipid spokesperson Ndileka Cola says the if it is determined that the incident is within the mandate of IPID, then due process will follow.
The identity of the victim is not yet known.
