A man dubbed the Western Cape serial killer has been convicted on six counts of murder in the High Court sitting in Swellendam.
National Prosecuting Authority regional spokesperson, Eric Ntabazalila, said Brian Mudyiwayana was also convicted on Monday on a count of robbery with aggravating circumstances, and two counts of being in the country illegally.
He said Mudyiwayana went on a killing spree between 2016 and 2017, murdering five women and a man in Mossel Bay, Swellendam, Bredasdorp, and De Doorns.
His victims included Mossel Bay school teacher, Lungelwa Dangatye, whose bound body was found in her Da Gamaskop home in December 2017.
Ntabazalila said his other victims were Moleboheng Mafata, Gladys Ntondini, Grace Nyasha Hondo, Naume Gwengwe, and Michael Pekaan.
“Pekaan’s body was found in his house, and a fridge, DSTV decoder, three television sets, a lawnmower, a new pair of work boots, a pair of training shoes, a DVD player, bedding, and a matric ball dress were all missing.”
The remains of the other women who he “duped with false promises of jobs,” were found in fields in the different towns.
Mudyiwayana was acquitted on a charge of rape.
Sentencing proceedings will get underway on Tuesday.
