Mpumalanga police have shot dead two cash-in-transit robbers and arrested two accomplices following a shootout in Delmas.
Spokesperson, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, said police responded swiftly after a cash delivery van was attacked by a group of heavily armed suspects on Monday, and managed to foil the robbery.
He said when police arrived on the scene they came under fire and in the ensuing gun battle two suspects were fatally wounded and two others, aged 24 and 34, were arrested.
“The rest of the suspects fled the scene. Police managed to recover a rifle as well as magazines, jamming devices, and police hand radios, Mohlala said.
He said the hunt for the remaining suspects is underway while the two in custody will appear in court soon on numerous charges including armed robbery and the possession of firearms and ammunition as well as explosives.
