A Free State VIP protection officer appeared in court on a charge of attempted murder when he went looking for a person who assaulted him during a fight at a tavern in Bloemfontein.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate said 49-year-old Warrant Officer, Vusumzi Makhaza, appeared in court on Monday.
He was arrested while escorting the Free State Provincial Treasury MEC and later appeared in court.
IPID spokesperson, Robbie Raburabu, says the VIP officer was released on a warning.
He said the policeman went looking for the perpetrator and later that evening and found him at his girlfriend’s place.
She said the woman answered the door while holding her nine-month-old baby, but quickly shut it after seeing the police officer with a firearm.
"In an attempt to get access into the house, the police officer allegedly discharged his firearm hitting the door. The police were called and arrived at the scene after the police officer left," Raburabu said.
He said IPID was notified two days after the incident and arrested the VIP protector on 28 September.
Raburabu said at the time of his arrest, Makhaza was part of the security detail of the Free State Treasury MEC.
"He appeared in court on Monday 2 October 2023 facing charges of attempted murder and was released on warning and will be back in court again on 2 November.
