Union welcomes postponement of Amplats retrenchments

The National Union of Mineworkers has welcomed the decision to postpone the retrenchment of 14 000 workers at Anglo American Platinum's mines.

Amplats, the Department of Mineral Resources and unions met yesterday when it was decided that the retrenchments would be postponed for 60 days to allow for a detailed consultation process.

Amplats announced restructuring plans earlier this month.

NUM spokesperson Lesiba Seshoka says talks will starts next week some time.

"We remain quite hopeful that these jobs will be saved if indeed talks are given some time especially because the challenges we are facing relating to the supply of platinum in the Eurozone as well as in China and the issue relating to sales" Seshoka said.
