Funeral undertakers and the Department of Home Affairs have reached an agreement following last week’s protests, averting the threat of a strike in the sector.
The Unification Task Team, comprising of various funeral parlour companies, were protesting over numerous issues, including the department's certificate of competence, which is submitted before transporting a body from a mortuary, hospital, or forensic laboratory.
Spokesperson Muzi Hlengwa says an agreement was reached with Home Affairs and funeral undertakers will enrol for training.
He said their members have already started registering for exams so that they can be appointed as designated officers on a permanent basis.
